Blog: Tuition fees would close the door to higher education for numerous students

In the Ministry of Education and Culture’s vision for higher education in 2040, the share of tertiary level students will be 60 per cent instead of the current 40 per cent. Ministry of Finance policy outlook 2026 also aims to increase the number of people with higher education. However, in a successive sentence, it is proposed that tuition fees should be introduced at least for the second degree.

We students have already witnessed cuts from all directions during this government term, but the casual way tuition fees have been thrown around is the final nail in the coffin. Even now, studying isn’t fully free, you just don’t need to pay tuition fees. If tuition fees had to be paid in addition to the current costs, the door to higher education would be closed to many students.

Today is the Day of Free Education. Today in particular is a good day to remember that education is not a given, but a right that must be fought for.

Explore the new AI Assistant Navi!

Photo: Tampere University

AI Assistant Navi has been launched for pilot use for Tampere University students. Navi helps students to find study-related guidelines and instructions. You can ask it about topics such as starting or progressing with your studies, or advisory and support services available to students. Navi uses the Student’s Guide and academic counselling and study support materials as source material. It does not search for information using curriculum and course information or intranet news and events.

AI responses may be incomplete or inaccurate, meaning you should always check the original sources mentioned in the response. If the assistant is unable to answer your question, you can use it to submit a service request to Student’s Navigaattori. This enables you to contact student advisory services and continue resolving your issue with a specialist. You can also give feedback via the assistant. The feedback will be used to improve both Navi and the Student’s Guide. More information from email navigaattori.tau@tuni.fi.
