TREY guards and promotes doctoral students’ interests, too. This is mainly focused on studying and guidance matters as well as the status of doctoral students at the university, which includes collaboration with players such as The Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers and Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland TEK. Additionally, doctoral students may use the consultation services of the Specialists of TREY. Student union membership for doctoral students is voluntary. By paying the membership fee, doctoral students support TREY’s general advocacy work at both the university and the national level.

Doctoral students who have decided to join the student union are entitled to the same student union member services as graduate students. With the student card, they also enjoy the student benefits negotiated by the Student Union and Opiskelijan Tampere. Read more about student discounts on Opiskelijan Tampere’s website. Doctoral students are not entitled to travel discounts by Matkahuolto nor Kela’s student meal discounts – however, the student-owned restaurant chain Juvenes offers lunch at a reduced price for doctoral students.

Starting January 2024, the doctoral students get a student discount on all train tickets! The VR discounts are available only with student cards that have the VR logo on them. Doctoral students can download  free mobile student cards like Tuudo or Frank app to get the discount. Unfortunately the old, plastic TREY doctoral student card do not get you the discount, but all doctoral student cards bought starting January 2024 have the VR logo on them.

Doctoral students are entitled to SportUni membership if they are student union members. You can pay the SportUni fee when enrolling in OILI-service or by card or ePassi in SportUni Atalpa, Tamppi Areena or TAMK service desks.

There is no chip on the doctoral student card, so it does not serve as an access card. For access to campuses, a doctoral student must obtain a separate access card or download the access control application – more information on this in the University’s Intra!
