Lecture Event: Finnish Queer History, June 11, 4:00–5:30 p.m.
WHAT: Two short lectures on queer history followed by a discussion
WHERE: Cafe & Aula Toivo, Päätalo 2nd floor, Tampere University City Centre Campus
WHEN: June 11, 4:00–5:30 p.m.
COST: Free!
TREY and Tampere University Equal Opportunities Committee are organizing a lecture event focused on queer history during Pride Week!
The event will feature presentations by Tuula Juvonen, University Lecturer in Gender Studies and Adjunct Professor of Women’s Studies, and Postdoctoral Researcher Joe Jukes. The first lecture will be in Finnish and the second in English. Both presentations will last 30 minutes, after which the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions. The event is open to anyone interested in the topic, whether you are a student, a staff member, or from outside the university community!
Tuula Juvonen’s lecture (in finnish):
Exemption from Gender. Photographs of Women’s Rights Activists from the Late 19th Century as a Subject of Research
Tuula Juvonen, University Lecturer in Gender Studies and Adjunct Professor of Women’s Studies, discusses her work on the research project she leads, “Imagine Me: Representing Visual Queer History.” In the project, she searches for photographs of women’s rights activists from the turn of the century and interprets them by examining the relationship of the individuals depicted to their gender and sexuality during a time when women had to seek exemption from gender restrictions in order to study at the university.
Lecture by Joe Jukes (in english):
Photographs, Poses and Pals: how to catalogue a community
Joe Jukes, a postdoctoral researcher at Tampere University, also working on the Kuvittele minut project, will present their research from the collections of the Labour Museum Werstas in Tampere. They will talk (in English) about the lesbian photographer Auli Kaartinen, with a focus on the photographs she took of her friends and community in the 1980s and 1990s. Kaartinen’s photos document proto-queer and anarcho-lesbian activism, but they also shine a light on the intimacy and importance of lesbian and queer friendships.
Let’s keep the event safe and enjoyable for everyone. The event adheres to TREY’s Safer Space principles, which can be found on the TREY website here.
However, if you encounter inappropriate behavior at the event or have feedback regarding equality that you would like to share, please contact TREY’s harassment contact persons at hairinta@trey.fi.
Accessibility: Cafe & Aula Toivo is accessible from the building’s main entrance. Upon entering through the main entrance, there is a ramp on the left leading to the elevator that takes you to the venue. Upon exiting the elevator, there is an accessible door on the right leading into the venue. The nearest accessible restroom is located on the lower level next to the entrance to the banquet hall. The space has no high thresholds, and most of the furniture is movable. The lighting is not glaring, and the furniture stands out clearly against the background. The space has some echo and is not equipped with an induction loop.
Pride Flag Workshop
WHAT: Pride Flag Workshop
WHERE: Kamula (Mustanlahdenkatu 18)
WHEN: 12.6. at 17-20
PRICE: Free!
In celebration of Manse Pride, Sekava, Tahra and Kamula are once again hosting the Pride Flag Workshop on 12.6. at 17-20!
The event begins with a presentation on different Pride flags and their history, after which each participant gets to create their very own flags or signs for the parade on Saturday. At this event you can unleash your full artistic potential and have the freedom to paint just the kind of flag or sign that best describes your true colours and identity as a whole. We have art supplies available for making the flags and signs, but you may also bring your own if you wish.
Accessibility: The entrance to Kamula is accessible. A taxi can park right in front of the Kamula entrance on Satakunnankatu and a portable wheelchair ramp is available at the Satakunnankatu entrance. At the entrance, there is a doorbell at a suitable height, which you can ring, and a Kamula employee will come to open the door and put the ramp in place. There is also a courtyard with an accessible parking space with 2 hours of parking time. The courtyard entrance is between Kamula and the Kotipizza on Mustalahdenkatu. The path from the courtyard to the Kamula entrance is asphalt and flat, but the distance is more than 25m. The interior of Kamula is all on one level and there are no thresholds. If there are many people inside the venue, there should be enough space for turning in a wheelchair and Kamula employees can also help by moving furniture slightly if necessary. There is one gender-neutral toilet in Kamula, which can accommodate a manual wheelchair. Unfortunately, it is not possible to use the toilet with an electric wheelchair. You can attend the event with an assistant and a guide dog. There is no induction loop in Kamula.

Joint Student March and Block for the Manse Pride Parade on August 13 at 1:30 p.m.
TREY, Sekava, and Tamko are once again organizing the traditional joint student block for the Manse Pride Parade. Come join us in marching for equality!
A separate block has been reserved for students in the parade, and we’ll meet at the Central Square on June 13 at 1:30 p.m. More detailed location and arrival instructions for the block will be updated on TREY’s and Sekava’s social media accounts as well as on this page closer to the parade, once the Manse Pride organization provides us with the block’s location!
Accessibility: Keskustori has cobblestone paving; in front of the Town Hall, the paving is flatter; along Hämeenkatu, there are tram tracks and the road surface is paved; otherwise, we will be walking along a flat asphalt road. There is a fairly long uphill slope in the Rongankatu underpass. Upon reaching Sorsapuisto, the road turns into a sandy path.
An accessible public restroom is located in Keskustori, next to Kirjastonpuisto.
You may participate in the parade with a guide dog or an assistant.
