Blog: As a halloped at the heart of university democracy
Are you interested in being a halloped? Do you know what the Academic Board is? Is there democracy in the University? Ellinoora Laaksonen’s blog answers all of these questions.

I am Ellinoora Laaksonen, a student of literary studies and a former student representative in university administration, an ex-halloped, who just finished their term in the Academic Board. The Academic Board is the highest academic administrative decision-making body of Tampere University. Still have no idea what I’m talking about? The Academic Board is responsible for establishing and terminating degree programmes, approving curricula, and appointing the board of the foundation university, among other duties. Issues related to research and education are actively brought to the Academic Board for discussion, and the rector and vice rectors always open meetings by sharing news from their areas of responsibility. The most important duty of the Academic Board is to make sure that the voice of the community gets heard by the rector and vice rectors and other bodies that prepare matters. The opinion of the Academic Board has an effect on further handling of matters, even when the Academic Board would not have the actual authority to decide.

Explore the AI Week Programme!
The Autumn AI Week will take place from 28 September to 2 October 2026. Throughout the week, we will once again explore artificial intelligence and its safe use within the higher education community from a variety of perspectives. The programme will include presentations, webinars and trainings. The AI Studio, launched last spring, will continue the discussion on current AI-related topics. This autumn, there will also be more hands-on training sessions and workshops for both staff and students. Explore the programme and set aside some time in your calendar!
The presentations will be held in Teams. AI training sessions for staff and AI workshops for students are held on campus. Daily news on various AI topics will be also shared in both Finnish and English on the intranet during the week.

International Mobility Services drop-in hours

Or, are you an exchange student at Tampere University and need to meet a mobility specialist? You’re welcome to meet the International Mobility Services! We can be found at Student’s Navigaattori on both the City Centre campus (Main Building, 1st floor, A121) and Hervanta campus (Kampusareena, 2nd floor, A215, booth B) campus on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 14:00 on the following dates:

In addition, during the application periods, you can meet us at our drop-in hours on both campuses as follows:

Apply to be a Student Representative in University Administration for the term 2027–2028!
We are looking for student representatives, also known as hallopeds, for the Academic Board, the Education Council, the Societal Interaction Council, the Appeals Committee, and all seven Faculty Councils for the term 2027–2028. The application period is from 24 August to 13 September 2026.
The bodies decide on and monitor matters relating to the supply and structure of education, student intake, the quality of education, curricula, and the societal impact of the university. The role of the student representatives is to act as the voice of students within the university administration and to ensure that students’ interests are not overlooked in decision-making. You can fill in the application and act as a student representative in all of the bodies using either Finnish or English as your working language.
Halloped positions are suitable both for students with previous experience in advocacy work and for those who have only recently become interested in the topic. Faculty councils, for example, are an excellent place to begin a career in student advocacy, while the Academic Board is better suited for those with more extensive experience in advocacy.
Harassment contact persons’ walk-in appointments will resume after the summer break on September 8!
Are you concerned about an issue or experience related to inappropriate treatment?
TREY’s harassment contact persons will have walk in appointments every few weeks from September until December. You can come and discuss incidents of harassment or bullying, conflicts or other issues of concern with a low threshold. All discussions are confidential.

Kotila’s Saturday Brunch for Student Families are back!
Join us for a relaxed Saturday morning where we prepare and enjoy a delicious brunch together. The activity is free of charge and intended for students with children. Please come together with your child🩷
It’s a great opportunity to enjoy good food, meet other student families and spend time together. Note that the main language of the meetings is Finnish. You are warmly welcomed even if you don’t speak Finnish but would like a safe environment to practice it.

Apply for a Student Grant from the Workers’ Educational Fund by 30 September 2026
The Workers’ Educational Fund gives out grants to those completing higher education and upper secondary education. The purpose of the grant is to enable cultural, scientific and artistic endeavours as part of or alongside studies.
When evaluating grants, special emphasis is placed on the apllicant’s hobbies, activities that promote communiality, and performance in studies. Grants are allocated to applicants under the age of 29. As a rule, one degree is supported only once.
The application period for grants for 2026 is open from 1 August to 30 September 2026.
