Introductions of Chair of the Board applicants

Puheenjohtajahakija Silja Volasen kuva

Silja Volanen, 5th year student in Mechanical engineering

Hi! My name is Silja Volanen, and I am applying for the position of Chair of the TREY Board for 2027. I am a 24-year-old mechanical engineering student, and this year I have acted as TREY’s Board Member responsible for social affairs and member services. Previously, I have held positions such as Wappu Secretary for Tampereen Teekkarit, as well as several different roles within my own guild. This year, I have had the opportunity to observe TREY’s operations from a very close perspective, and I would like to take a broader role in shaping both the Student Union’s activities and its advocacy work. In particular, I am excited about supporting the next Board in its work and contributing to advocacy efforts related to both the parliamentary elections and the Representative Council elections. As Chair of TREY, I would strive to be visible and influential, while remaining approachable. I would continue the work I have already begun in promoting equality and improving students’ quality of life. I believe I am the right person to lead the Student Union because I bring not only practical experience in both advocacy and community building , but also genuine enthusiasm.

Pinja Varis, 6th year student in Energy engineering

Hi! I’m Pinja Varis, a 6th-year energy engineering student, and I am running for Chair of TREY for the year 2027. I have been actively involved in our student community in various positions of responsibility throughout my studies, and in recent years, I have gained solid leadership experience, first as the Chair of Ympäristöteekkarikilta and most recently as the Chair of Teekkari Union of Tampere. My TREY is a communal, safe, and approachable place. My TREY builds an open culture of discussion, listens to students, and dares to take a stand. My TREY is known for its clear, transparent, and consistent actions, and is perceived as a visible and influential actor among both the student community and stakeholders. The student community in Tampere is at its best when things are discussed and accomplished together. I have had the opportunity to grow and make an impact in Finland’s best student community, and next, I want to help make it even better as the Chair of TREY. As Chair, I will bring TREY determination, a people-first approach, and the curiosity to dream big and deliver results.

Introductions of Board applicants

Aurora Kuusisto, 5th year student in Journalism Studies, Kontakti

Hello! I’m Aurora Kuusisto, a 26-year-old Bachelor of Social Sciences and a Master’s student in journalism from Tampere. I’m a member of TREY’s Representative Council for the second term, and I’m also the 1st vice chair of the Representative Council. Through my work and studies as a journalist, I’ve gained a good perspective from different sectors of society, and now I want to use my own contribution to the student movement and student advocacy. In TREY’s board I would use my communication and interaction skills. I’m particularly interested in how TREY could be made more visible by investing even more in social media channels and audience engagement strategies. In TREY’s communications, I would focus especially on short video and audio production, as well as on brightening the brand’s image. I think the student movement should be available to students’ needs, and I’m ready to work hard for that!

Kuva hallitushakija Santeri Härkinistä.

Santeri Härkin, 3rd year History student

Hello! My name is Santeri, I’m a third-year history student and, as Plato would define me, a human being. My interests include history and literature, particularly the urban histories of Babylon and Carthago, the religions of pre-Christian Europe and Norman Culture, Napoleon and the temperament of the French Revolution. And, on those rare occasions when I get my hands on a good bottle of red wine or a hot chocolate from Café Europa, Persian philosophy and poetry. During my relatively short time at the University, I’ve been involved in association activities from time to time, sitz, annual festivities, torisitsit, Kiskofests, here and there. I spent a year on the board of my own student association, and another in a student nation. This past year on Kollektiivi, TREY’s events section, has taught me a great deal about the operational side of organizing events, while also giving me the opportunity to work alongside members of TREY’s board and its specialists. And this is something I’d like to continue by serving on the TREY Board for the year 2027.

Hallitushakija Venla Niinilammen valokuva

Venla Niinilampi, 4th year Journalism student

Hello! My name is Venla Niinilampi, and I am a 22-year-old master’s student. I am currently in my fourth year of studying journalism and serve as the Chair of my student association, Vostok. During my time at university, I have gained extensive experience in student organizations through my roles in tutoring, financial management, and, most recently, as Chair of Vostok. These positions have taught me a great deal about university governance, student advocacy, and, of course, the practical aspects of organizing events and activities. By joining the Board of TREY, I would like to challenge myself in a new way and take on broader responsibilities. I have also developed experience in managing and understanding larger and more complex issues through my work as a journalist, where it is often necessary to familiarize oneself with new topics quickly and thoroughly. Next year, I would particularly like to help ensure that students’ voices are heard during the upcoming renovation of Päätalo. Outside of student organization work, I enjoy solving crossword puzzles, sewing patches onto my student overalls, and cooking good food.

Valokuva hallitushakija Miikka Roslöfistä.

Miikka Roslöf, 6th year History student, Treyn Demariopiskelijat

Hi! I’m Miikka Roslöf, a 24-year-old Bachelor of Social Sciences and a master’s student in history. After several years of studying in Tampere, I’ve gained experience in advocating for students’ interests by serving as a vice council representative on the student council, a member of SYL’s climate network, a student representative, a tutor, and a student ambassador. In addition to these roles, I have experience working at the Finnish Parliament during an internship, as well as engaging in advocacy at the city and wellbeing services county levels. As a candidate for the Board, I am particularly motivated by the upcoming parliamentary elections, as student organizations must engage in strong advocacy to ensure that students’ voices are heard and their interests are represented during the next legislative term. I want to support TREY’s advocacy efforts both before and after the elections. I also hope to strengthen students’ sense of belonging within the student community and help reinforce TREY’s role as a builder of an inclusive community.

Santeri Ala-Röyskö, 4th year student in Politics, Keskeiset

My name is Santeri Ala-Röyskö, and I am a 29-year-old fourth-year student of politics. My major is political science, and my minors are international relations and public management. I am currently working on my bachelor’s thesis. Most of my free time I spent on student organisations and politics. I currently serve as the second vice-chair of the Centre Students of Finland, chair of the Tampere Centre Students, and second deputy representative of Keskeiset. I also serve as a deputy member of the city audit committee and the culture and welfare committee in Hollola. In my free time, I also enjoy following ice hockey, watching TV series, and listening to metal music. My first preference is the social policy sector. I am applying for this sector because I have gained experience working on social policy issues through my current and previous positions. I am also generally interested in social policy, particularly issues related to student accessibility, financial security, and well-being.

Veera Hursti, 6th year student in Environmental engineering, Kyltyrböndet

Howdy! Veera here, an active teekkari and somewhat of a student organisation veteran. I’m usually described as an open, approachable, genuine, and reliable person who gets any job done. I have gained experience in organisational work through approximately 20 different positions. For example, I have served five years on my guild’s board, 1,5 years on the board of Teekkari Union of Tampere, 1,5 years as student representative in the education committee. Additionally, I worked as student advisor for a year and have been active in the Uranaisten opiskelijaseura, where we strive to promote equality and diversity in technical fields. Since the beginning of the year, I’ve been a full member of the Council of Representatives and a member of the Administration Committee. I’ve studied environmental policy, communications, futures studies, and responsible business for my minors. Through my studies, I have become interested in societal advocacy, which is exactly why I am now applying for the TREY board. On the board, I want to work with student advocacy and politics, as well as parliamentary election campaigning. Earlier this year, I got to practice advocacy all the way in Brussels as part of the Youth Climate and Energy Vision 2040 project, and it would be great continue this work next year from a slightly different perspective!
Kuva hallitushakija Lauri Heinosesta

Lauri Heinonen, 6th year student in Computing sciences

Hi there! I’m Lauri Heinonen, a Bachelor of Science in Technology and an active teekkari straight from the heart of Hervanta. I’m applying for the TREY board to build an even more unified student union that is strongly seen and heard across all campuses. I have extensive experience in the organizational field, having been active at both the city centre campus in ITU ry and in Hervanta in Sähkökilta. I have been actively involved in student organizations since my freshman year, leading a wide range of events and projects in various roles. On the TREY board, I would have the most to offer in the organizational sector, where I would bring together my skills and networks from both campuses. I want to promote a truly student-friendly facility policy, defend the interests of associations, and ensure that the university actually stops to listen to the students’ voices. In addition to strong advocacy, I want to invest in our community. With my experience as a freshman coordinator and organizing large events, I want to take already functional concepts forward and develop an even more inspiring student culture in Tampere. It is important to me that all students are taken into account regardless of their background, and that freshmen are boldly encouraged to try new things and get involved in developing our activities.

Hallitushakija Aino Närhen kuvituskuva

Aino Närhi, 6th year student in Industrial engineering, Brothers and Sisters of Alpha-Chemistry

Hi! I’m Aino, a sixth-year technology student, and I’m running for TREY’s board, with associations and vice-chair as my main sector targets. In addition to these, I’m interested in member services and issues related to the finances of the Student Union. I’m a 26-year-old industrial engineering student, and during my years of study I have had the opportunity to accumulate experience in a diverse field of student associations. I have held various positions in my own home guild at Bioner, Teekkari Union of Tampere, as well as in TREY’s Representative Council and committees. In addition to these, I have also been able to learn about student influence through TEK activities. I always give my all in everything I do! I’m an accomplished, approachable, and practical person who likes to take on new challenges and likes to make things happen together with others. In particular, I want to be involved in building a community where it is easy for students to participate, make an impact, and find their place.

Mikko Oosi, 6th year History student, Kontakti

Hello Hello! I’m Mikko Oosi, a 27-year-old Bachelor of Arts in the Humanities and a master’s student in history. In addition to association work and education policy, I like reading, movies, and anime, among other things. I’ve been actively involved in student associations for a long time and have nearly five years of experience. In my home association, Patina, I served as events coordinator for one year and as president for two years. On the board of YTY, the student association for the SOC faculty, I’ve served as vice chair and, this year, as the chair. As a student representative, I have been involved in education policy advocacy on the SOC Faculty Council, the Campus Development Group, and the Education steering Group. I also serve as one of six student representatives on the student group for the Päätalo project plan. I am serving my first term as a vice-representative on the Council of representatives. I completed a three-month internship at the university in the HIFI unit in the spring of 2026. I have seen and experienced the university from the perspectives of a student, a student representative, and an employee, and I want to bring all this knowledge and experience to the benefit of the entire university community on the TREY Board. As we address next year’s key issues, such as the parliamentary elections and changes to the university’s facilities.

Kuva hallitushakija Aku Soinisesta

Aku Soininen, 5th year student in Literary studies, ViVa

Hello! I’m Aku Soininen, a fifth year student in literary studies. At the moment I’m the chair of my home association Teema and a member of TREY’s Representative Council. In addition to being a chair, my association experience includes working as a treasurer and tutor organiser. My other notable experience is in educational and social affairs work. I’ve also been a student representative in the literary studies programme. Thus you might guess that the student community, advocacy work and equality are very important to me. Now as a chair and a representative I’ve seen the rich student culture of our university across three campuses, and the inspiring advocacy work of the student union. In light of this I want to be a big part of integrating students into our communities and work for our rights. Along association work and my studies I dream of reading books, spend time with my friends, listen to music and exercise.

Kuva hallitushakija Veera Niemestä

Veera Niemi, 7th year student in Information and knowlodge management

Hi! I’m Veera Niemi, a 24-year-old student in Information and Knowledge Management. Over the years I’ve organized plenty of events in plenty of associations, for example at my former home guild Hiukkanen, Teekkari Section and different hobby associations. On top of that I’ve managed communications in different associations. A leopard can’t change its spots, so as a natural next step, I’m interested in managing events and communications in the board of TREY. Next year, I want to be a part of building a student union, where each member finds their place in different events and the communication is equal and interesting. In addition to organizing events, I’ve acted as a security officer a lot, which has emphasized my attitude as a people-oriented problem solver. My friends would describe me as a sunny and energetic person who is not afraid to take action. Alongside association duties my hobbies are horse riding, powerlifting and all sorts of dillydallying.

Ida Ylimyllymaa, 3rd year student in Administrative sciences and 7th year student in Literary studies

Hi there! I’m Ida, a third-year student of Administrative Sciences and a seventh-year student of Literary Studies. Throughout my university studies, I have gained several years of experience in student association activities, both as an events coordinator and as a treasurer. In addition, this past spring I served as Wappu Director on the Wappu Team for The Biggest Wappu in Finland. As a project worker at TREY, I had the opportunity to observe the day-to-day work of the board from the sidelines, which in part inspired me to run for a seat on the TREY board myself. I am primarily interested in the Events, Organisations, and Member Services sectors. Through organizing The Biggest Wappu in Finland, I gained experience in managing projects on a larger scale, and serving on TREY’s board would allow me to take on new challenges. I would focus particularly on the long-term development of Wappu, TREY’s 9th anniversary celebrations, as well as the upcoming milestone of its 10th anniversary. I want to contribute to developing a Student Union that is as approachable and accessible to students as possible, while further strengthening the sense of belonging and community among students.

On the board of my subject association, Dialekti (ex-Lexica), I’ve had roles in tutoring, external relations, communications, and branding. I served as a representative on TREY’s RepCo in the last term, and now I’m the translation intern at TREY. As a TREY Board member, I’d use the expertise I’ve gained both through association activities and in working life. My main interests are communications and tutoring. In communications, I’m interested in producing bilingual texts and visual materials. I’d also like to create visible and engaging communications for parliamentary and RepCo elections, and to further develop accessibility. I know tutoring on the association level, but it’d be great to continue this work on the broader community level. That said, my interests are not limited to these sectors; advocacy, equality, and community are all areas of interest to me.

In addition, I am in my second term of the council of representatives as a deputy representative of the International Representatives Group (IRG). Last year I was the official delegate from IRG in the SYL general assembly, which has been an inspiring experience in which I saw the core of the Finnish student movement. I would like to spend the next year on the board of our student union ensuring, for instance, that our student voices are well-heard during the election spring as well as afterward. Outside of association circles I enjoy spending time moving in nature, with friends, and otherwise with new side quests.

Kuva hallitushakija Elma Sulejmanovicista

Elma Sulejmanovic, Master’s student in Material sciences

I have studied chemical engineering in University of Applied Sciences before starting my studies now in material chemistry. There I was really involved in tutoring for multiple years. I helped new students in starting their studies and also with other questions that they may have had on their mind. I am organizing events for The Union of Professional Engineers in Finland. In these events I was representing Tampere’s Engineers as a so called host. As a host, my duty was to make sure the event goes smoothly and all the feedback gets heard and used to upgrade our events in the future. I have also worked in communication team at Tampere Engineers where I advertised and did marketing for upcoming events.

Kuva hallitushakija Ville Varismäestä

Ville Varismäki, 4th year student in Biotechnology and biomedical engineering

Hello! I’m Ville Varismäki, a 23-year-old Biopsi member. I’m currently in my fourth year studying Biotechnology in natural sciences. Over the years, I have gained extensive experience in student association activities, having served as Assistant Treasurer and Tutor, then as Treasurer and Website Officer, and currently as Chair of Biopsi ry. In addition to my involvement in Biopsi, I also serve this year in an officer role at TaKoRU ry. My fellow Biopsi members have described me as responsible, friendly, social, and proactive. I am primarily interested in contributing within the student organization and local educational affairs (KOPO) sectors. I find supporting and developing student organizations highly rewarding, and I want to help create a remodeled Päätalo that genuinely reflects the needs and interests of students. In the field of educational policy, my main goal is to lower the threshold for students to participate in advocacy and decision-making processes. I study on the Kauppi campus, where TREY is often perceived as distant and somewhat mysterious. Even for me, the student union only became truly familiar during my current year as chair. As someone who has grown within the Kauppi student community, I believe serving on the TREY Board would provide a valuable opportunity to bring the student union closer to Kauppi while also bringing Kauppi closer to the student union. That said, my goal is not to be merely a diversity recruitment representing Kauppi’s interests. Rather, I want to be a genuine asset to the entire student union and all its members.
