What is this about?

The role of the Societal Interaction Council is to support and facilitate the University’s ability to interact with the rest of society. The Council takes part in societal conversation and promotes the societal impact of education, research findings, and innovative and artistic activity.

Most members of the Societal Interaction Council are apart of the University’s teaching and research staff who have experience and interest in building societal interaction related to educational affairs and research. There is staff representation from each faculty. The Council has four student representatives: three of them represent the University, while one represents Tampere University of Applied Sciences. All the members have a deputy member.

What are the requirements to be a student representative?

You are eligible to be a student representative if you are a student at Tampere University with a right to study for a lower university degree, a higher university degree, or a Licentiate, Doctorate or Specialist Degree in Medicine. You must be enrolled for the academic year by the end of the application period. You are eligible to be a student representative if you are not eligible for election as a member of the University’s staff.

When choosing a student representative, the following general criteria primarily apply: your ability to act in the role and motivation for the position.

Student representatives are required to communicate frequently with the Student Union. Student representatives are also required to speak English fluently, as the Council works chiefly in English.

What is a halloped/student representative?

Hallopeds or student representatives are fellow students who act as the students’ voice in Tampere University’s administrative bodies. Their job is to make sure that students’ rights are respected when preparing and making decisions in the administration. Students are the experts on studying and on what goes on in students’ lives, which is why it is important that we get as diverse a representation as possible from different faculties, degree programmes and years of study in each administrative body.

There are a wide range of different positions available. Unfortunately, only the Societal Interaction Council works in English at the moment, so in other positions, fluent Finnish skills are still required.

What do the student representatives do?

Student representatives participate in administrative bodies’ meetings and work with the administration. When working as a student representative, while being active and alert is important, you don’t have to spend all your free time on student representative work. Depending on the administrative body, there is usually one meeting per month. Staying updated on the current events at the University and listening to your fellow students give you additional readiness for the position.

What do you get from all of this?

Student representative work gives you more than just a pat on the back. In addition to the invaluable experience, student representatives receive, among other things, monetary compensation for participating in meetings and study credits when working in university administrative bodies for at least one year.
