The implementation of a student-discounted annual ticket is a step towards making Tampere more student-friendly, and the budget proposal published today by Mayor Ilmari Nurminen includes the student-priced annual ticket! Finally, our persistent advocacy work has borne fruit!

Blog: Tuition fees would close the door to higher education for numerous students
In the Ministry of Education and Culture’s vision for higher education in 2040, the share of tertiary level students will be 60 per cent instead of the current 40 per cent. Ministry of Finance policy outlook 2026 also aims to increase the number of people with higher education. However, in a successive sentence, it is proposed that tuition fees should be introduced at least for the second degree.
We students have already witnessed cuts from all directions during this government term, but the casual way tuition fees have been thrown around is the final nail in the coffin. Even now, studying isn’t fully free, you just don’t need to pay tuition fees. If tuition fees had to be paid in addition to the current costs, the door to higher education would be closed to many students.
Today is the Day of Free Education. Today in particular is a good day to remember that education is not a given, but a right that must be fought for.
