New staff members have started work this autumn at TREY. Additionally, the job descriptions and titles of two long-term employees have been updated. Let’s get to know our new employees and hear what they have to say!
Mantė, Specialist in Educational Affairs and International Affairs
Who are you?
Labas! My name is Mantė and I am a Specialist in Educational Affairs and International Affairs, substituting in the position until the end of March 2027. Ever since I moved from Lithuania to Finland in 2021, I have been active in the Finnish student movement, serving as a board member of TOKYO (the Aalto ARTS student association), Aalto University Student Union (AYY) and the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL).
My educational background is in service design, which has shaped how I approach advocacy and develop solutions together with students. I am excited to bring my experience to TREY!
How has work at TREY started for you?
Since my first day at work, I have felt very welcomed and included in the local community. I am excited to continue advocacy work on behalf of students, defending free and accessible education and amplifying the voices of international students at Tampere University, in Tampere and across Finland.
What personal touches will you bring to your work?
I bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the work that I do. I am always open to developing new ideas and finding creative ways to support the advocacy work at TREY. However, during my breaks, you will find me dancing to whatever songs are currently popular.
Sumu, Specialist in Tutoring
Who are you?
I’m Sumu Sirén, an “n-year” student of biomedical engineering and biotechnology from Hervanta, an association operative, and the new Specialist in Tutoring starting 1 October.
How do you feel about your upcoming tasks?
I’m excited about the autumn and what’s ahead! Tutoring is one of the best activities that you can do at university, and I’m so happy to be able to share this joy<3
What personal touches will you bring to your work?
Fun graphics! In the spring I already started Tuuttiception, in which Tuutti the tutoring mascot gets to let loose and step away from its official role.
Henna, translation intern
Who are you?
I’m Henna, the translation intern at TREY this autumn, a fifth-year English language and translation student, an association operative, a NääsPeksi crew member, and much more.
How has work at TREY started for you?
My work at TREY has got off to a good start with working on diverse translations and editing. So, I’ve had the opportunity to get straight into doing exactly what I came here to do! The work community has been very welcoming and nice, so in that sense, too, the start of my internship has been very good.
What personal touches will you bring to your work?
What makes translation so interesting is that the translator always gets to make their own choices and create a text that reflects their own style. Even though a translation is based on another text, it is always a new text in its own right. So, I will translate texts in my own way and add my personal touches to them. And if nothing else, at least I will bring bad (or the best kind of) jokes to my colleagues.
Aliisa, Visiiri’s editorial intern
Who are you?
Hey! I’m Aliisa, a journalism student, a crazy cat lady, and the editorial intern at Visiiri. [Add a funny comment here]
How has work at Visiiri started for you?
My work at Visiiri, and thereby at TREY, has started off well. We have a nice work community, and I get to do what I’m passionate about, drinking coffee in my cubicle. Oh, and doing a socially meaningful job in the form of student-oriented journalism :)
What personal touches will you bring to your work?
My role naturally gives me the opportunity to address fairly large audiences, which is admittedly quite an intimidating thought. My goal is to produce high-quality, useful news content for Visiiri’s entire readership, but I wouldn’t mind it if my work brought a smile to people’s faces, too.
New job descriptions!
TREY’s office has reorganized some work tasks, especially to strengthen the resources of management and communications. Saana, TREY’s Specialist in Communications and Advocacy, has moved to the position of Communications and Service Manager, while Helky, TREY’s Specialist in Member Services now works as TREY’s Specialist in Member Services and Communications. Who are they and what do they think of this change?
Helky, Specialist in Member Services and Communications
Who are you?
Hi, I’m Helky and many of you already know me from behind the service desk on Hervanta campus. Outside of work, you’ll often find me hiking in the woods with my dog, exploring various cultural attractions and venues, or building and solving escape rooms.
How do you feel about your new tasks?
It’s exciting to be able to take on new challenges at TREY and develop as a professional. That said, I’ve been working on communications within member services, working mostly behind the scenes, but now I’ll have more of that on my desk! I will continue to work with the old familiar tasks behind the service desk along with my new tasks.
What personal touches will you bring to your work?
I’ve been described as approachable and enthusiastic, and I plan to bring that to my new role as well! I hope my work will reflect both confidence and a relaxed approach.
Saana, Communications and Service Manager
Who are you?
Saana, one of the longest-serving employees at TREY, a cheese enthusiast, and an association operative who is returning to studies in higher education this autumn. I step into my new role as the Communications and Service Manager from my previous role as the Specialist in Communications and Advocacy enthusiastically and humbly.
How do you feel about your new tasks?
Excited and inspired! After my long experience as a chair, leadership comes naturally to me, but it is exciting to be able to serve in a manager position for the first time in my career. It’s wonderful to see that after eight years together, TREY and I can still offer each other new experiences and possibilities.
What personal touches will you bring to your work?
Boundaries and love. At TREY we work out of passion, and I hope that with my managerial position I can support our staff especially in prioritizing their work and handling their stress, so that each of us are able to do their best for students, without burning themselves out in the process.
