The University has made the 2025 internationalization and cultural grant decisions

The University has made the payment decisions regarding the 2025 internationalization and cultural grants for associations. The application criteria and processing of the applications were carried out in cooperation between the University and TREY. The final decisions on the granted sums were approved by the University’s President, Keijo Hämäläinen. In addition to these grants, the University also awards support for student athlete activities, which TREY is not involved in preparing or processing.

“Student associations carry out impactful actions that support our University’s internationalization and cultural activities. Through this student activity support, the University contributes to the vitality of a diverse association field. We are also pleased to enable student sports and the participation of student athletes in major competitions”, says Keijo Hämäläinen.

Internationalization grants

In 2025, a total of 20 000 € was distributed as internationalization grants. With this support, the University encourages student associations to undertake measures that improve the integration and employment opportunities of international students and promote the internationalization of all students.

This year, internationalization grants were applied for in the amount of 63 582,13 €, with nearly 140 projects submitted by 31 associations. The evaluation criteria for the grant, listed in descending order of importance for 2025, were:

  1. Promote the employment of international students in the Tampere region
  2. Promote the employment of international students outside the Tampere region
  3. Support the orientation and studies of international students
  4. Support the integration of international students into Finnish society
  5. Promote “internationalization at home” between international and Finnish students

In addition, one evaluation criterion was the reach of the grant, meaning how many international and Finnish students benefit from the grant. Applicants were required to be associations operating within TREY.

This year, the criteria aimed to focus the internationalization grants primarily on international students. Over the years, study trips abroad and purely entertainment-focused events such as sauna evenings have been gradually excluded from eligible projects. Grants were awarded in descending order of priority—projects under category 1 were mainly supported for their full requested amount, followed by category 2, and so on, until the funding was exhausted. As a result, especially projects under category 4 received only a small portion of their requested funding.

The number of projects and applied sums by category were as follows:

  1. 11 projects, 7421 €
  2. 12 projects, 7962,60 €
  3. 9 projects, 2695 €
  4. 96 projects, 43 383,53 €
  5. 9 projects, 2120 €

Cultural grants

A total of 23 000 € in cultural grants was awarded in 2025. Through this support, the University promotes the diverse cultural activities of student associations. The goal is to enable the production and development of culture and art within these associations.

This year, 50 777,27 € in cultural grants was applied for. There were 17 applicants, of which 11 met the eligibility criteria. Eligibility was defined as having a primary purpose of producing performing arts and holding the status of an association within TREY. The funding was distributed proportionally in relation to the amount applied for. Eligible costs included those directly related to performances or appearances. Expenses such as renovations of guild rooms or the purchase of storable furniture were not eligible for funding.

A significantly larger number of associations applied for cultural support this year compared to previous years, which resulted in smaller grant amounts per association due to the total grant budget remaining the same.
