Teekkari culture is an important aspect of student life in Tampere. Teekkari culture is, above all, about community spirit and traditions, such as Wappu, sitsits, kyykkä and the singing culture. It is worth remembering, however, that it is impossible to verbally explain everything about the teekkari culture – you simply have to live it.
Teekkaris have a long history: Technology education began on a university level in Finland towards the end of the 19th century. Teekkaris first arrived in Tampere in 1965 as a unit of the Otaniemi University of Technology, and in 1972, the Tampere University of Technology was founded followed by the Student Union of Tampere University of Technology. When TTYY and Tamy merged at the beginning of 2019, Tampereen Teekkarit ry (Teekkari Union of Tampere) was re-established to implement the teekkari culture in Tampere.
