As a part of our climate campaign, we want to highlight the possibilities of influencing on a global level in addition to the national level. Climate action must be taken fast and in a large scale, and that is why changes are also needed in international politics. One way of influencing the prevention of climate change on an international level is to sign the Ilmastoveivi2019 petition.
From next July until December 2019, Finland will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The goal of the Ilmastoveivi2019 campaign is to make Finland use the opportunity of the Presidency of the Council of EU to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Finland will have an opportunity to make a motion in the council to update the target levels of the climate and energy package for 2030 and 2050, and Finland should take it.
The other demand of the Ilmastoveivi2019 petition is, that Finland must prioritise climate in all official and unofficial decision-making situations. Finland has all the prerequisites to take the lead in the whole EU’s climate politics and claim its place as a global climate leader. We want to encourage Finland to do this.
The Ilmastoveivi2019 campaign aims to collect 500,000 signatures and to hand the petition over to the new prime minister of Finland in the spring of 2019. The President of the Republic himself has promised to be the 500,000thsigner.
Because acknowledging environmental issues is a part of all of TREY’s activity and influencing work, we as a student union want to take responsibility in stopping climate change, and we encourage everyone to sign the petition!
