Student Union’s awards and recognitions were given out at the annual celebration

The third annual celebration of TREY took place on 16 October at restaurant Ziberia. The Student Union’s first badges of merit and honorary memberships were given at the annual celebration. The Executive Board and the Council of Representatives decided on the recipients of the awards earlier this autumn.

The badge of merit can be awarded to a present or former member or staff member of the Student Union who has acted long and actively for the benefit of the Student Union and furthered the goals and aspirations of the Student Union. Badges of merit were awarded to TREY’s first Chair Paula Sajaniemi and former Financial Manager Joonas Streng.

Chair of the Honorary Committee Korpiluoto listed reasons for awarding Sajaniemi the badge of merit: “The first Chair is exceptionally significant to any community, and the Chair has a special role in launching the operations of an organisation. The basis for operations created during Sajaniemi’s term in office, and the continuous development of Student Union, clearly indicates how Sajaniemi’s work has continued to make an impact even after her term as Chair. Sajaniemi put her focus not only on TREY’s internal operations but on the forming of the Tampere student community as well.”  Sajaniemi was present at the celebration to receive the badge of merit.

Streng, on his part, did commendable work as the Student Union’s Financial Manager: He created financial processes and reviewed and built the basis for financial management. He also helped to advance significant developmental projects, from resolving the future of the Ylioppilastalo foundation to the selling of facilities.

The student union invited CEO Päivi Lindén, Chair of the Board Tommi Rasila, and deputy CEO and Hed of Personnel Ritva Hietala, all from Juvenes Oy, as honorary members. The Student Union may admit an individual, who has contributed outstandingly to the endeavours of the Student Union and is not its current or former member or employee, as an honorary member.

The Chair of the Honorary Committee described that Lindén “embodies the spirit of Juvenes – or, at least, truly cherishes it”. Lindén has led Juvenes Oy through the pandemic, having maintained her initiative, excitement, and courage to try new things on an exceptional level. Rasila has played a critically important role in leading Juvenes Oy through tough times during these past couple of years. Rasila has given his all to the work as the Chair of Juvenes Oy’s Board and put all his contacts and resources in good use. Hietala is a long-term figure at Juvenes Oy, one side of a strong managing pair, deputy CEO and head of personnel. Hietala has had a long career and is fully committed to the company, and the the results of her work have been extraordinary. Lindén and Rasila were present at the celebration to receive the awards.

Good Teacher awards for commendable work with teaching and its development were also awarded at the celebration. TREY’s Good Teacher award, already a tradition, is an expression of gratitude directly from students to teachers that inspire them. This year’s award recipients are Anneli Yliherva from the Degree Programme of Logopedics, Finnish language teacher Liisa Mustanoja, and automation engineering teacher Veli-Pekka Pyrhönen. The award includes a stipend from the university foundations, invitation to TREY’s annual celebration, and a caricature illustration by Jenni Kuhalainen. Pyrhönen was present at the celebration to receive the recognition.
