Doctoral students can join the Student Union, but their membership is voluntary.

Doctoral students who are members of TREY are entitled to the same Student Union services as Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students, including student benefits negotiated by the Student Union and Opiskelijan Tampere. However, doctoral students are not entitled to FSHS services and therefore their membership fee is considerably smaller as it does not include the FSHS fee. Furthermore, doctoral students are not entitled to VR or Matkahuolto travel discounts or Kela’s student meal discounts. However, the student-owned restaurant chain Juvenes offers doctoral students lunches at a reduced price.

The student union also advocates for doctoral students and represents their interests. The advocacy work is focused particularly on questions related to teaching and supervision as well as the status of doctoral students at the University; regarding the latter, we cooperate with for example The Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers and Tekniikan Akateemiset, TEK (the union for students and researchers in technical sciences). Doctoral students may also use the counselling services offered by the student union’s specialists. By paying the membership fee, a doctoral student can support the general advocacy work that the student union does both at the University and nationally.
